Their knowledge of GUSA informs them of the opportunities and limitations that GUSA presents to its President and VP, and we would expect them to work hard for the LGBTQ+ community within these limitations.

NICOLO FERRETTI

Presidential Candidate

Nico exemplified a wealth of knowledge when it came to both GUSA and the queer community on Georgetown’s campus. While we would have liked to see more concrete policies, Nico showed a great deal of respect for the LGBTQ+ community and has an incontestable history of advocacy and allyship on campus.

"Instituting a LGBTQ+ sensitivity training for faculty and staff might deter therapists from recommending medical leave and might lead to faculty using more considerate language and respecting the pronouns that students use. I have too rarely been classrooms where professors asked to share their pronouns, which is something that should be standard in every classroom. Making sure professors start to ask for pronouns is an important part of our proposed trainings. Training also could make sure that faculty and staff consider the intersectionality of our LGBTQ+ students. They would help them recognize that a black pansexual feminine identifying person faces different struggles than a bisexual cisgender woman for instance."

"Coming from a boring Catholic school with a lot of straight white guys, it’s beautiful to see drag queens at GAAP weekends and see the Rocky Horror Picture Show sell out in fifteen minutes because it creates a thriving, spicy, beautiful, welcoming culture."

"[Betsy] DeVos’s regressive changes to Title IX regulations also expose LGBTQ+ students to sexual assault. Their return to a hard gender binary doesn’t respect the discrimination that non-binary students often face. Moreover, the definition of sexual harassment that requires that it be “so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it effectively denies a person equal access to the school’s education” greatly increases the burden of proof placed on survivors and is incredibly hard to meet because of the struggle that comes with proving mental health damages. Even more difficult is proving a detriment to one’s educational experience. By making the process harder on survivors, DeVos’s regulations would disincentive reporting, especially among communities that already have low reporting, like lesbian women, and high rates of sexual assault, as among bisexual women."

"As Georgetown continues to renovate, construct, and purchase structures, It is paramount that the president of GUSA make sure this newly included policy stay in the campus plan and that renovations to older buildings involve including all gender bathrooms."

BRYCE BADGER

Vice Presidential Candidate

image_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Bryce’s responses were solid across the board. In addition to his personal experiences with the queer community, Bryce has a wide intersectional knowledge and a history of advocacy on this campus. He demonstrated a great familiarity with the challenges facing the queer community on campus, and he offered concrete solutions to these problems.

"Many non-binary and gender nonconforming students are forced to reside in living spaces where they may not feel comfortable being around other students or will face social alienation within their living space. I believe that your dorm should be a safe space or an oasis for you, so the fact that students on this campus may not feel comfortable in a space they’re paying $14,000 a year to occupy is absurd. Georgetown’s primary argument against implementation of gender neutral housing is most likely lack of space and a perceived lack of interest in the creation of this space."

"GLMR’s establishment represents a key message to me; as queer students we all come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, but we are statistically more likely to fall into poverty or be discriminated against in our careers. GLMR for me is our way of ensuring our fellow queer students on campus are supported from start to finish here at Georgetown and able to set us up for success upon graduation. The establishment of QPOC means to me that the consciousness of the LGBTQ community on campus is changing to finally recognize that our experiences as queer people are bound to be different because of our intertwining identities (i.e. race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status and more)."

"In order to address the severely disproportionate availability of mental health and sexual misconduct resources available to queer students on campus, [we want to push CAPS and the Title IX office to hire more queer individuals and more queer people of color."

"It’s no secret that as queer students we are more susceptible to sexual assault and issues with our mental health. As chief of staff, I asked the personnel team to develop monthly activities and outings for members of our team to attend in order to alleviate some stress. I also worked with the personnel team and HoyUs to develop a bystander training for the entire GUSA executive which recognizes the impact identity on power dynamics and how that translates to higher rates of sexual assault."
