Supportive of the queer community and willing to work on policies that support them, but we wanted to see more concrete and beneficial policy positions to the community.

JOSHUA MARIN-MORA

Presidential Candidate

Demonstrated knowledge about national issues facing the community, but misrepresented resources available on campus for queer students. Has a pro-LGBTQ+ voting record in GUSA, but did not actively advocate for the community in his role or sponsor pro-LGBTQ+ legislation. Most of his work is within GUSA, and he lacks a history of intersectionality and engagement with advocacy groups on campus. He offered basic but not compelling plans for the community as GUSA President.

"The rate of LGBTQ+ students that have experienced some form of sexual assault on campus is higher than the averages of other universities that participated in the AAU Campus Climate Survey in 2019. I believe this comes from not as many students receiving training that focuses on the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the larger problem on campus that has allowed for little change in the rates since the last climate survey."

"There have also been alarming nationwide statistics regarding the disproportionate number of trans POC that are being killed and not receiving national coverage. Trans people are also more likely to face violence in prisons, and also homeless shelters. This stems from institutions not implementing or removing trans-inclusive nondiscrimination policies. This also is applicable in policies regarding housing and medical/health care, to name a couple."

"Truthfully, I personally hadn't advocated as much for the LGBTQ+ community in prior leadership roles during my first couple of years at Georgetown. Last summer, [we] went with one of our best friends to the DC Pride parade. He recently had come out to us and took the parade as an opportunity to be come to terms and be comfortable with who he was. Speaking for myself, I started the process of learning how to be an ally. I took this with me to the GUSA Senate."

"[We hope to] work with ResLiving to expand Crossroads LLC. This means looking into moving to another residential hall that is a more comfortable living space. More importantly though is hosting a conversation with student leaders of the LGBTQ+ community to discuss the status of the LLC along with the faculty advisor and community director in order to also discuss the future of the LLC."

ISBEL DELEON

Vice Presidential Candidate

Respectful of the queer community, she offers policies that would be a good step forward for LGBTQ+ students. However, she only has a surface-level understanding of the problems that queer Hoyas face, and an outdated understanding of the resources available on campus. Much of what she said was in good faith, but lacked specificity.

"As a community that has only recently gained more societal acceptance after centuries worth of backlash, it is important to recognize how crucial allyship is. The absence of allyship can be very much due to the fear of taking up space that doesn’t belong to oneself. To absolve this fear, there needs to be a way to let potential allies know that they are welcomed and encouraged to learn more as to how to be supportive in these spaces."

"A lack of institutional or parental education provided to queer persons on the safety of sexual activities results in a major health disparity. The higher STD rate for gay men compared to the rates of heterosexual men further displays disproportionate access to medical resources, marking them a disadvantaged group of folks in terms of health status."

"Last year, [we] actually had the pleasure and privilege of accompanying one of our best friends to the DC Pride parade. While it seems like something small, he had recently come out and took it as an opportunity to learn to be more comfortable as he came to terms with his sexuality. While the experience was entirely for him, it was a learning experience for all three of us, as allies and friends."

"[We hope to] work with ResLiving to expand Crossroads LLC as occupancy this year is tragically low. This means looking into moving to another residential hall that is a more comfortable living space."
